A Few Of My Favorite Things
A Few Of My Favorite Things
I need ya all’s help. I’ve had a bugger of a cold the last week, and for the most part, I’ve been banished to the spare bedroom in what will probably prove to be a futile attempt to keep the cold from spreading to the rest of the family. So, I’ve caught up on a lot of reading, and watched way too much television. I fellow can get a little blue in this state if he ain’t careful. Okay, do you all remember the song from The Sound of Music that goes "I simply remember a few of my favorite things, and then I don’t feel so bad"? Well, let’s all put a list together and maybe I won’t feel so bad; shucks, maybe we’ll start a dad-gum tidal wave of feel-good emotions ... it’ll be groovy, dude! Okay, maybe I need to back off the anti-histamines a little, but seriously, let’s get to know each other a little better here. I’ve got commenting turned on, all you have to do is sign in to post your comment. Daniel, David, Dean, Wayne and all the WGS crew, ya all chime in too! Ready, set, let’s get motivational!
The rules are that there ain’t no rules. We should probably stick to music, guitars, amps, and speakers, but heck, if that ain’t what trips your trigger, then what is? I’ll get the ball rolling...
A few of my favorite things:
My Blackface Super Reverb (okay, ya all already knew that).
The solo on Night Rangers Don’t Tell Me You Love Me (betcha didn’t see that one commin).
The solo on Hound Dog - man, it just don’t get no cooler!
My new baby girl ... and her mama, too, of course!
The smell of a vintage tube amp warming up.
A brilliant blue sky after a front has blown through and taken all the humidity and crud with it.
A drummer who knows as much about what not to play as what to play.
My Dad. When I was a teenager, he was the stupidest person I knew, funny how those things change, isn’t it?
Quality products, made by hand by people who care ... I guess that’s why I’m a part of the WGS family! (I hope this last one makes all of you feel a little better.)
Now it’s your turn. What makes you tick? What flips your switch? If you were lying in bed with a bad cold, what thoughts would bring a smile to your face? Here’s your chance, sign in and post your comment now! Next week I should be back to my regular self ... well, as regular as ever anyway. We’ll get back to talking speakers, music and all that stuff. Ya all take care of yourselves; there are a lot of bugs going around -Vaughn-

1. The look on all the players faces at the end of a good old fashioned free form improv jam.
2. The smell of a vintage guitar case.
3. The feel of a new set of strings.
4. The knowledge that there are still a few manufacturers in the U.S. music industry that have refused to have their products made in freakin' China OR any other country!
5. Talking with American military vets.
6. The rush you get when the overtones of a vibrato begins to feedback.
7. Listening to how well everyone in the Allman Brothers Band played together on the "Live at Fillmore East" album.
8. How my new 12", 8 ohm, ET65 looks and sounds in my amp!
9. My 1961 Blonde Fender Showman head and matching 1x15 JBL loaded cabinet.
10. The bonds of friendship formed over the years with the many great musicians I've had the honor to play with. All you brothers know who you are! What a long strange trip it's been!

Hope by now you are feeling better, I know at my age colds last longer, hurt more. Anyway, I recently bought a hm75/veteran 30 combo and will tell you how nice it is to know that someone really does care about tone. Obviously, I do have a warm fuzzy feeling when I play through these speakers in my old PEAVEY DEUCE VT. Man, does it make this old amp sound great, kind of like in the 70's when we were really playing a lot of music. I have owned every amp and cabinet out there and like you, I love the older stuff better ( just the smell of those tubes warming up makes me smile). Not that modern equipment is any less better, but the old black face and a good guitar is still cool. I have to tell you congrads on baby girl, I bet your heart sings with joy when you see her. I've played all around and have to say that I hope that every musician that is playing, or trying to play, keeps in their hearts that it can be the most wonderous feeling to play along with others and discover that it is called music, and that it is good. Man, siting in front of the fire with a guitar and strumming has to be one of the greatest feelings ever. Letting the notes ring and playing different songs you learned throught the years should bring smiles to you, I know it does me. Remember when you first started learning to play guitar and the feeling you got when you hit every note and chord correctly? Memories like these cannot be bought or sold..they are priceless! Hope you all the success that you and your family search for. doug
