A little background...

I have a Marshall 1966B cabinet wth two G12T-75 speakers mounted diagonally.  I also have a 1965A cabinet with four 10" G10L-35 speakers.  Both cabinets are 24" by 24" so they are smaller than a standard 1960 4x12.

I don't really have an amp head to use with these yet but I have a Trace Elliot Velocette combo that I use with the 4x10 that sounds killer. I've used the 4x10 with a 18 watt marshall clone and a zinky, but the Velocette is champ so far.  However, I am rebuilding a 1966 blackface bandmaster head which doesn't make a lot of sense because generally I like the EF86 Vox sound and the JTM45 sound.  But, I like the BF Bassman sound.  Apparently, Mike Ness of social distortion uses the same cabinet with a Bassman (modded) so maybe it will make more sense that I realize.

I got the 2x12 recently and plugged it in but I really HATE the sound of the G12T-75 speakers.  Very harsh to my ears.

So, here's the question... what do people recommend for the 2x12?  I'm thinking either two Green Beret's or two Reapers.  I don't think I can go "wrong" with either but I'm wondering if people think one model of the other will be "better" with the 4x10 cabinet.

Thanks for your help,

David

Hear ya on the G12T-75's ... ugly!! I have the 1965B 4x10 cab, too ... and love it with the stock Celestions.

For your 2x12 ... do a search of the site (search box on upper left) ... post back if ya still got questions!  Yea, probably GB's or Reapers ...

I have a friend with a pair of reapers and a pair of berets so I tried them out last night with the 4x10. The speakers were 8ohm each so I wired them in series (16 ohm), then ran them in parallel with the 8 ohm 1965A cabinet.  I'm not sure if that makes a huge difference or not.  Perhaps the 16 ohm cabinet would be a little less relative volume because of the higer impedence, I'm not sure.

The Berets sounded good with the 4x10 but the Reapers sounded better. However, I like the Green Berets by themselves better than the Reapers by themselves.

So that leaves me with a dilemma... go for a cabinet that sounds better by itself or go for one that sounds better with the other cabinet.  I suppose to good thing about this dilemma is, neither combination sounded "bad" and both were WAY better than the G12T-75.

Somebody kick in me in a direction

So I bought a pair of Green Berets and put them in the 1966B.  I started playing them with my tweed champ clone (I know probably a strange first choice but it was the closest amp).  To be honest, I had been tiring of the champ and not playing it at all... now I'm hooked again.  Then I plugged it into my Trace Elliot Velocette.  Again, awesome!  I don't know how to describe them other than they sound like Rock & Roll.

I still haven't hooked them up with the 1966A at the same time (current amps have one speaker out), but I should have the Bandmaster completed soon and I will report back.

Hi,new member here thank you,

I recently made a 2x12 baffle for a 1965a 410 cab. Installed a vintage 30 and a G12 H anniversary both 12 ",16 ohm. What  a killer sound .I have  Ceriatone JTM 45 and an Orange dual terror. Amazing punch and tone,in a 24" x 24" light weight  real plywood cab.

Thanks

Roger

Have pics of the build, but cant upload
