As far as my recording amps, my primary is a fantastic Magnatone Starlet (3.5-watt 8" open back 12AX7 50L6 35Z5), a Vox AC4C1 (PCB 4-watt 10" closed back 5751 12AX7 EL84), a VHT Special 6 (HW 6-watt 10" open back 12AX7 6V6), Blackstar HT5R 5W stock, and a Badcat Cougar 5 (PCB 5-watt 12" open back 12AX7 12AX7 EL84).
I'm looking to upgrade speakers in all but the Badcat, which has a Celestion V30 12". But I might switch that one, too.
I'm going to start with the Vox and the VHT and my Magnatone (speaker is sounding a little flabby). I don't have a choice about the 8", but I have questions about the 10"s.
I called Warehouse Guitar Speakers yesterday and had a nice chat with the fellow there. I described my issues, and he recommended that I go with the ET-10 for the Vox AC4C1:
https://wgs4.com/10-et10-65-watts
And a g10c for my VHT:
https://wgs4.com/g10c
The recommendations were based on various reasons and things I described about my amps, but he said that they like the way that the "Veteran" sounds and breaks up in pairs (or threes), but they don't like them in 1x combos. What I have read on the forum reinforces this.
My objective was to get rid of the fizz / shatter in the Vox while still sounding chimey, and to reduce how dark the VHT is.
So, would people concur? I worry a little about the vast mismatch in wattage; there was a post earlier about that, but it didn't really add clarity for me. Am I better off stepping down to a lower wattage WGS in both of these, or just take the advice? Will I never hear the glory of a speaker starting to stress?
Any recommendations on the other amps would be great. I'm probably going to re-speaker anything that someone strongly recommends.
Thanks!
Yes, I totally agree with the advice you've been given so far.
For the little Magnatone ... you will LOVE!!! the G8c ... they are mind-bendingly good! Oh, and be careful with that little "live chassis" gal.
Sorry if I've taken a while to answer your question. I've been fighting Pneumonia the last couple of weeks!
