A few weeks ago, I got an email blast from David Young about the goings on at the LA amp show that also happened to mention that WGS had been busy getting the new WGS 10" Green Beret to market and that everyone who tested it at the amp show was "geeked" about it. I had no idea this was in the works and how fortuitous, because my new Fender '68 Custom Vibrolux Reissue was delivered from Guitar Center just days earlier, and I have to say this is the BEST amp I've ever played from Fender, bar none, and I've had more than a few.  The 2x10 CVR (35 watts RMS at 4 ohms) comes with a pair of Celestion TEN 30s but with a magnet structure that is tiny, tiny. Call me a speaker snob if you will.  The TENs had a nice presence to them at lower volumes but I didn't like the sound when really pushed.  I ordered a pair the day David sent another email saying they were in stock.                                      The Berets arrived in a few days and I installed them in the CVR in less than 30 minutes. No wimpy looking magnet on these babies - and the sound of these horns are the real deal! Compared to the TEN 30, there's a tad more midrange, but the GBs do not bark or sound boxy, but croon. There is just the right amount of breakup and they are SMOOTH! Cleans are punchy and present with nice articulate highs without ice picks and a good bottom for 10" speakers. With a Timmy pedal (by Paul Cochrane) and a Telecaster loaded with Lindsey Fralin blades, the overdriven signal in combo with the natural breakup of the GBs is sonic heaven. Note that the Berets have barely enough clearance on the power tube side where part of a transformer cage literally rests on the speaker basket, but do go in.  Having said all this, the Celestions may be acceptable for some - they are actually a little brighter with good low end, but don't have the definition and body of the GB's which I attribute to the 38oz (guessing here) engine.  If there is a downside, it's that the speakers added a good 15 or 16 lbs to the weight of the amp, which was pretty manageable given the bantam weight of the Celestions. Nonetheless, I love this amp and speaker combination.  What has impressed me most is how great they sound in all styles of music, from country twang to jazz.  Congrats to David and WGS for living up to his hype.  This is the best sounding WGS speaker since the ET65.
