Kudos on a fantastic product and website.
After a 20 year break, I am diving back into the tubes pool. I have an early 70s 50 watt Traynor head, and just got an empty 2x12 Traynor cabinet of matching vintage. After speaking with some folks who know what they're talking about, and spending some time on line, I am absolutely sold on WGS speakers. Although it's been discussed many times already, I would like a little (more) help selecting a great pair of speakers.
I play in both blues and classic rock bands. My tones range from clean to full distortion, but no scooped metal hysteria. I use both humbuckers and single coil pickups. As for my likes: For single coils I seem to gravitate towards the range of sounds John Mayer gets with his Two Rock setup (yeah, I wish). For humbuckers, I love Joe Bonamassa's tone. Leslie West is also right up there.
The Traynor cabinet measures 25"W, 32.5"H, and 13"D. It is closed back, and there are no ports. I've read through much of the forum, and have read the blogs on speaker combinations. I was particularly impressed with the ET65/Reaper combination, especially after watching the video. But, I still have questions:
1. Would that be a good combination, considering the info I've given you? If not, can you recommend a better one?
2. Is the 65 watt/30 combination adequate for my 50 watt head? Would the Reaper be in any danger? Would it be safer to use the Reaper HP? What would happen to the tone? I haven't read/heard anything about that combination.
3. If I decided to go with matching speakers (a pair of Reapers?), should use the 30 or 50 watt versions?
Thanks!
It sounds like the ET65/ Reaper combo would be the way to go. If you wire them parallel there shouldn't be any danger of overpowering them. It should be a really versatile and dynamic combination for your Traynor.
If you are still concerned about wattage, the Reaper HP will still respond really well. I tend to get a touch more top end out of the Reaper HP compared to the normal Reaper.
