I'm to to build a 2.12 closed box for my Fender Bassman amp but unsure what speakers to go with this time.
In my other amps I have, 2x ET65's, 1x Retro 30's, and 4x Veteran 20.
I'd like to retain this Black Face tone, and make amp usable for various music styles.
Not very interetsed in mixing speakers though.
Your opinion is much appreciated.
The use of the amp is exclusively for a guitar (not bass)!
Cheers
Doug
Man, in the closed cab ... I'd go with another pair of ET65's ... I know ya probably want to try something new ... but the ET65's are my choice! Now, I have a vintage '65 small-box Bassman 2x12 cab that I got a convertible back for ... and I run it in 1/3 open with no dampening material ... and in that config, a pair of Reapers is totally amazing ... think about that :-)
Sorry if I've taken a while to answer your question. I've been fighting Pneumonia the last couple of weeks!
Thanks mate, wishing you a speedy recovery.
How are reapers different to ET's in tone .. (and obviously you are refering to HP model?)
I'm also thinking Invader or C/S, but never heard them in person!
I'm now considering a pair of Invader 50's, but with 1/3 open back, to go with my Bassman.
Thoughts, please!
I may be late to the party but I'm currently running two Invader 50's in my semi-open back 2X12 with my '67 Bassman. I'm really digging the sound I'm getting. One thing to keep in mind however, the brigth switch plays a huge roll in how these speakers behave. Witht the bright switch "On" you get incredible chime with a nice organic and "woody" type of feel. Just a real classic clean shound with a greenback vibe.
However, if you utilize overdrive pedals you will know that many of them sound like crap through an amp with a bright switch. They get real sterile sounding and futz out very badly. Most folks (including myself) run overdrive pedals with a Bassman and have the bright switch in the "Off" posisiton. I've found that it can somewhat "deaden" the speaker just a little. The sound is nice and thick and meaty but there isn't as much chime on the top-end. You can compensate by running the treble up higher and lowering the bass down to about 3.
Overall I'm very happy wiht the 2x12/Invader 50 speakers with my Bassman. It's a great rock n roll tone if that's what you're after.
